Cleft Lip and Palate: Need for Early Surgical Intervention

Cleft lip and palate are a birth defect, which results due to incomplete fusing of the tissues of the lip and the palate before birth. These birth defects are commonly called “orofacial clefts”, an infant may be born with either cleft of lip/palate or may have both, cleft lip and palate. Infants with the cleft lip and/or palate often have problems with feeding, speech production, hearing, dental and orofacial malformation which will result in poor self-esteem. Hence, early intervention aims to ameliorate the difficulties caused by the cleft; from infancy. Thus, the quality of life of an individual can be improved.
