Speech and language development post cochlear implantation: ‘Things you must know’

Cochlear implants provide a sensation of hearing to children who have permanent severe to profound deafness and cannot hear the full range of speech sounds with hearing aids. The big advantage of a cochlear implant over a normal hearing aid is that you are able to hear spoken language and speech sounds more acutely, and this facilitates more natural speech development. It is important that parents/ caregivers know the level of commitment that will be needed, particularly in the early years following implantation. There are several aspects of the child’s development and their environment that need to be a focus. Hence it is important to be aware about how is the development of speech and language skills post implantation in pediatric population.
