NIDAS 96: Management of Thalassemia – Awareness for Families

Time – 10:30AM – 12:30PM

Resource Person -Dr. Rema G (Associate Professor, Department of Clinical Hematology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi)

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder in which the body cannot produce enough healthy red blood cells due to defective hemoglobin formation. Effective management aims to maintain normal hemoglobin levels, prevent complications, and ensure a good quality of life. Regular monitoring by a multidisciplinary team comprising hematologists, pediatricians, and counselors is vital. Tests for liver and heart function, growth, and endocrine health should be done periodically. For some patients, bone marrow transplantation offers a potential cure, particularly if performed early and with a suitable donor. Advances in gene therapy are also showing promise for the future. Beyond medical care, emotional and social support are crucial. Educating families about the condition, its inheritance pattern, and the importance of compliance helps individuals lead healthier, more active lives. Early diagnosis and continuous care make a world of difference.
