Blindness and low vision, as major components within the spectrum of disability, significantly impact an individual’s functioning and quality of life. This topic explores the prevalence, definitions, causes, and classification of visual impairments, highlighting both congenital and acquired conditions. It emphasizes avoidable and uncorrected refractive errors, along with preventive and curative measures through screening, timely treatment, and awareness. It also addresses permanent visual impairments and the importance of low-vision aids (optical, non-optical, and electronic devices) in enhancing functional abilities and supporting greater independence for those with irreversible sight loss.
The NIDAS webinar creates awareness among people especially parents and caregivers of the individuals with disability, and thus provides a platform to share their concerns and clear doubts.
